P.C.D. AIR DISTRIBUTION DUCT

PERFORMANCE OF PRODUCT FOR WHICH EVALUATION IS REQUESTED

  1. Above and below ground duct systems
  2. Corrosive gases

DESCRIPTION AND USE OF PRODUCT: The air duct material is intended to be used for above or below ground supply or return air distrubtion systems and corrosive or non-corrosive exhaust systems.

The Class 1 air duct material is composed of 4 mil polyvinyl chloride plastic coated galvanized steel spirally wound into cylindrical duct with a continuous spiral lock seam joint. The coated steel may or may not be corrugated between the spiral joints.

The air duct material is for the use in conveying air at a velocity not in excess of 3600 fpm, a positive pressure not in excess of 6" water column and a negative pressure not in excess of 6" water column.

The Polyvinyl Coated Ductwork ( P.C.D.) air duct is supplied in 3" through 36" inside diameter sizes.

The basic methods to be used in assembling and sealing the duct materials are shown in Figure 1 located at the end of this report along with the size, gauge, and weight table.

  1. Connecting - Connect ducts with P.C. D. connectors fastening with sheet metal screws every 6" around the circumference, with a minimum of 3 screws per joint.

  2. Polyvinyl Tape (PT) Joint Sealing System - Apply 2 wraps of P.C.D. tape* around joint. Keep slight tension while wrapping to eliminate wrinkles and air bubbles.

Hard Cast ( HC) Joint Sealing System - (Alternate to Instruction #2)** - Coat Hardcast tape with adhesive and wrap joint with 2 layers, smoothing out to eliminate wrinkles after wrapping.

  3. Supporting - When hanging P.C.D. duct is required, pipe strapping shall be used every 8' or less; or suitable device such as angle iron shall be used to support the duct.

* Tape to be manufactured by Polyken Industries, Kendall Division.

** HardcastAdhesive and Tape to be UL Classified with respect to Fire Hazard Classification.

Manufacturer's Load Specifications
#1 Standard 4" - 8" 400 lbs/Linear Ft.
  10" - 12" 600 lbs/Linear Ft.
#2 Standard 14" - 36" 1800 lbs/Linear Ft.*

The above loads apply when P.C.D. is installed as recommended with general compaction in backfilling.

* All ducts 14" or more in diameter are corrugated as per sketch below.

TEST RESULTS

  1. The report on P.C.D. Air Duct, File No. MH 10892, Project 77NK9537, 78NK12090, dated March 8, 1979, prepared by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc, in accordance with UL Standard 181. The results indicated performance of the product to the UL Standards. A copy of the complete test report is on file in the BOCA Offices.
  2. Report No. E85-071 0 Linear Loading on P.C.D. Air Duct for Foremost Duct, L.L.C., dated July 16, 1985 was prepared by Hauser Laboratories of Boulder, Colorado.

LIMITATIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE: The Foremost Duct, L.L.C., P.C.D. Air Duct, Sizes 3 inch through 36 inch inside diameter, listed in this report have been evaluated for conformance to the 1984 edition of the BOAC Basic/National Codes with the 1986 Accumulative Supplement. These findings may be used as part of the technical data for acceptance by jurisdictions administering these codes with the following limitations.

  1. As a Class I Duct.
  2. For an air distribution system with a maximum air velocity not to exceed 3600 fpm.
  3. With a maximum of 8'-0" distance between support hangers.
  4. With a maximum rated positive and negative pressure not to exceed 6" water column.
  5. P.C.D. Air Duct shall be installed in conformance with the manufacturer's instructions.

IDENTIFICATION: All Foremost Duct, L.L.C.., P.C.D. Air Ducts manufactured in accordance with this Research Report shall be marked at the plant with the identifying language "See BOCA Research Report No 86-4."

This report is subject to annual certification. The failure of the applicant to comply with this requirement will result in the lapse of this report. Further use of, or reference to this report is then no longer permitted.
